I remember in the late 50's and early 60's, all students were required each day to spend an hour in a GYM class; the class took place outside unless there was inclement weather, then it was moved inside to the basketball gym... regardless of whether we were inside or outside, the first 10-15 minutes were spent doing calisthenics...
If we were outside/inside, we would play volleyball, basketball, running track, jumping hurdles... and, other types of activities that would involve 20-30 people at one time. Of course, there were always some students who would not bring gym shorts or tennis shoes in the hopes that they would not have to do anything...
I would suspect that most of those people are living with obesity today!!!
